I got the green light from Shopbot to go ahead and post this. The idea is it will start at 0,0,0 and scan like the normal routing until it finds the edge of the part, then it will follow only the contours of the part, not probing any area of the table outside of the part.
It would be a good idea to cut a piece of thin plywood the shape of the extents of your part to attach the part to. If you have dead areas in the center of your part it will still probe them, but when it reaches ZMAX at the edges, it will change directions and continue scanning the part.
This should save a bunch of time. I gave the probe back to the owner of it, so I have not had a chance to try this out yet. Hopefully someone out there is feeling adventurous and will give me some feedback on it.
