Can I program my spindle to dwell in an area for a few seconds?(example code)I am trying engine turning and want to have the spindle touch an area and stay there for a few seconds, move a half inch on the Y, touch and dwell for a few seconds, repeat this many times.

Also what is the biggest collet I can get for my HSD spindle? I am thinking of using cratex stick but am open to other ideas.

Thanks,

Todd

Manually edit the file adding a "PAUSE 3", or however many seconds you want, at each location.

Don't know about the collet.

Todd...
In most cases 5/8" or 16mm. I have heard of 3/4, but they would be thin and I would be cautious.

I bought a 5/8" collet from Shoipbot and was told that was the largest available for my 4hp HDS. I wanted the 3/4", maybe I was missinformed!!??

Todd, Daryl...
All above is true. 16mm(5/8) is largest size recommended for 4hp spindles. Some 5hp ER 25 machines (Colombo)have 3/4". Most tools with larger than 16mm shanks are designed for power of spindles greater than 4hp with ER 32 collets. SO, you may be able to buy a larger collet, but you could be installing a tool that is larger than recommended. This may put the warrantee of an expensive piece in question.

Scott, What I meant was I want it to dwell in the -Z position for a few seconds, I tried the pause with no results. Here is my work around. Can anyone think of a better solution.

Thanks,
Todd

The machine will pause for the number of seconds equal to the number after the PAUSE in the file.

What is the purpose of having the spindle "dwell in an area for a few seconds"?

David,
Thanks, Why did the pause not work after I put it in here?

John,
I am playing with engine turning.

Todd,

You can't have the (,) just PAUSE 15.

I'd put the down/pause/up in a subroutine and call it iteratively after each move.

as fast as the spindle turns do you really need it to stop? I would think just a fast touch would be fine. or are you turning it by hand.

How about setting the plunge rate to .003"/sec and drilling from 0.49" to 0.50"?

The slowest plunge rate SB will accept is .05 ips.
