just got back from the Amer. Woodworking Show in Phil. where they were showing a new CNC lathe for pen making. it'll handle spindles about 12" long and 3" in dia. they had a very special show price, only $200 per month for 2 years.

Um ??? Thats twice what an SB goes for, $9600,
and you only get two axis and a much smaller machine.
Get the "experimenter" package from SB and
Do your own CNC lathe.
Get the Griz 9"x19" lathe for $795 and mount the steppers yourself.
$795 + the SB Exp pkg still leaves a lot of $$$
for "Mod time".

actually it's about the same price, 24 months at $200 ea., but that's my point. for a few hundred over the base SB price, you can have a system with a much larger capacity. with the right choice of router and lathe bed, you could turn pens or columns or bath tubs.

David:
OK OK my multiplication skills are at an all time low :-) Duh ???
Conor:
Shopbot "USED" to list it on the price sheet.
I see that it's missing today :-(
Sorry for miss info.
They USED to offer the Software, controller,
cables & steppermotors ONLY as a "developers"
or "experimenters" package.
The idea has tempted me several times.
Like slap this stuff on a small Mill and
Wheeee !
One could probably develop some kinda of materials handling robotics using the same "Basic Stuff"
Give SB a call a see what they say.

i saw this cnc pen lathe.
the best part was the imaging program they used.
the shopbot indexer does not run a preview program.but the little machine has a cool one and it operates in cut mode so you can see what your cutting on screen( kind of like an animated progress bar
very cool!
but the price is too high.
I told him about my cnc indexer, he assumed it was $75000.00. ( I didn't clue him in, it would have broken his heart )
