Just heard that Norm Abram host of New Yankee Workshop is no longer going to be hosting that show. They are stopping production. This is a sign that we are all getting old, people...

Magic,
I told my wife Norm was retiring, and she asked me the same thing!

Once he's retired. i imagine he will just whittle his time away.
Enjoyed the show, gonna miss him! They never did release the secret as to how you make all those nice things without making any sawdust. Annaway, I'd like the new hosts to be from "Tool Time" BUT, Tim Allen as co-host.

I can just see a Tim Allen designed shop,
planing 1x2 pine on a 100hp 48" Yates American, while neighbors sit in dimly lit homes!
couldn't resist!

Works for me! Well, except at Christmas when that power is dedicated to the exterior Christmas decorations.

Guys...
I wonder who we are going to get to let our customers think that anything can be built in an hour show. It's sometime a tough sell to let them know that it really takes a week!

I'll miss the phrase "A measured drawring is available."

How about " assemBAly" too?
One of my favorite Norm memories was watching in agony as he used the wrong side of a ball peen hammer to peen over some rivets....

Looks like a chance for Shopbot to fill in and have a woodworking show. Couldn't cost to much being on PBS and might get folks interested in CNC instead of the old ways Norm did things. I'm sure the folks on this forum could come up with thing to build and demo's of different things the Bot can do.

I would watch and go "Nooo... you don't do it that way" or "That's not how I'd do it, I'd be done by now"
Then again... he's got the show and I'm lucky if any watches me for more than 3 minutes... and in fairness if they did they would just say the same things about me. ;-)

Norm's show will probably be replaced with a Woodworking reality show with two teams of woodworkers, marrooned on an island, swapping large families and dancing with D-list celebrities. Somehow a big shiny balloon gets mixed into all this...

They must have a couple of seasons worth of bloopers they can show.

Maybe they can do a rotating series. From Florida, "The New Cracker Workshop". From Indiana, "The New Hoosier Workshop", etc. All using indigenous materials to make regional specialties.

just out of curiosity, where did this info come from? norm abrams and the producers of "this old house" were on pbs radio a couple of hours ago with no mention of there not being another season. i have contacted the ny office and they are looking into it as well (standard answer)

I first read about it on the Woodworking magazine blog.

Hey Jim,
Why dont you start a show called The southern red neck shop. You might have to get rid of them chess pieces and just make some checkers. That could be your next career.

there you go life size checkers!! the article looks legit seems there would be more news!

You could also build furniture and cabinets out of pallets. Maybe get Budweiser as a sponsor .Then after every show you can say There is no more important safety rule as to wait till after your work is done to have a BUD .

After 20+ years I think he basically just ran out of things to make.
One thing i found was that you can pick up on certain techniques he used on different projects and you could apply them to your projects.
Having a background in television production, when i first got my bot, I had thought of trying a shopbot based show. I went so far as to plan several shows, lined up the production work, and talked to DIY networks but the hangup was that all productions have to be produced by
Scripps-Howard. I have all my own studio equipment and wasn't interested in paying another company to produce what i could do myself plus i didn't see a big profit for me. It's still a good idea but the ones who would benefit the most is DIY and Shopbot, and that's not a bad thing but just not on my dime. I'd like to see smething though.

Norm's shoes will be tough to fill but if there's a TV time slot available I nominate Marc Spagnuolo, The Wood Whisperer.

I wrote a response but deleted it before posting. My parents taught me to keep my mouth shut if I didn't have something nice to say.
So: Jack-Like you, after umpteen years I still haven't run out of new ideas!! Just can't find near enough time to try them out.
