View Full Version : V carving trouble
I'm making a sign but all cuts are working out well but the V carving of letters.
Is there any tips or bits or settings that would help clean this up. What is happening is the letters are looking very distorted.
Thanks.

Cameron, When you are using V-bits make sure the angle of the bit actually matches the angle in the tool data base. The indicated degree for the given bit may not actually be correct.
Bryson
I checked and it is or seems to be correct.
It is one of the starter kit bits from ShopBot and is the same one choosen in the software.
THNX for the reply.

Cameron: I agree with Bryson. Be sure you are zero'ed in the z-axis properly as well:
Hint: One of the preconfigured v-bits in partworks, I am fairly sure is named a 60 degree cutter but is actually set up as 90 degree, or vice versa. If you are using PartWorks watch out for this and correct the angle degree value.

Hi
Gerald is right. The 60 degree V bit is set up as a 90 degree in VCP and PW.

please describe what the word "distorted" amounts to.

A lot of the v bits you see on the market that look like "indianhead arrows" seldom have a perfect angle when you look at it close up.
That's one reason I recommend....(wait for it....
wait for it...drumroll please...)
Centurion Tools!
They had a machine that they showed the difference in one of the cheap bits and how theirs came to an absolute point and that makes a difference in your cut for sure.
I really don't see a problem with the sign it looks pretty good from what i can tell.
Yeah - the vbit that came with my table did not come to a true point. Do you have a close-up pic of the issue?

Hi all--thanks for the replies--Cam and I work together--so its our machine having issue--turns out the very tip of our VBIT is chipped. We want to make 500-600 of these signs, and we were worried we were doing something causing the letters to be distorted--its hard to see on the photo--but the letters in question are not very well defined at all
So--off to the bit store eh
BTW...what a great forum!

Call Fred At centurion tools and he will hook you up with one of those extra sharp weapons like Jack is showing above.
Just thought I would add to your endorsement Jack!
Legal disclaimer here: I have not talked with Fred or used one of Fred's tools yet, However every once in a while, well actually about every other post for some people, there is a mention of this Legend of a man named Fred from Centurion, which is a planet is another solar system from what I gather, that supplies cutters and bits that are, well; out of this world.
To my knowledge nobody has ever seen Jack and Fred in the same room, coincidence? Maybe? Kind of makes you go HUMMMMMMMMM!!!!
