My main computer with all my good stuff on it has a problem and will get to the desktop but then shortly thereafter freeze up. I have a external drive with 500 gigs space and want to transfer all the good stuff off the internal C drive to the external drive and i hope i could do that if i boot up into safe mode. I'm not sure if i will have all the drivers to recognize the external drive but i'll see.

During boot up how can i get to safe mode? Is there any other method i can use to get all my stuff off before i have to try to restore it?

As the computer starts up press the F8 key. That will give you the advanced startup menu which will have the two safe mode options on it.

If not your next option probably is to remove the internal hard drive and put it either into another computer, or make it an external drive for another computer, and do the transfer on this other computer.

Boot in save mode and get a big thumb drive you will be able transfer files that way .I just had to do that to a PC.

I was able to boot up to safe mode, connect a 750gig external drive and am transferring files that way.
