I'm sure that the instructions for how to post photos on this site are somewhere in plain view, but somehow I have missed it.
So...how do you go about getting a photo into your post?

see where it says "upload attachment" right nerxt to "preview/post message"? click that. Keep in mind your photo must ne 640x480 max and less than 50 k in size or you will get a error message. Then when you try to go back all your typing will be gone so before you go to upload photo i would copy/paste your typing into a notepad file in case you get an error. I learned that the hard way. Also after it gives you a file designation in the "preview post" section your text might be..
..."that thats how i did it./123poptest.jpg"
make sure you put the "./123poptest.jpg" on a line by itself below text. This will make picture line up below. Otherwise it will be beside picture.

How can I edit a photo to fit the requirements? At 50k the photos I've edited are very small. I've seen many photos of good size and quality posted on this site.

If you can save your photo at 72DPI it will be helpful in getting it under the 50K.
The photo that I posted on the Sign section yesterday was about 3" x 4" (approximately) at 72 DPI and was just under the requirement, but showed up pretty well on the post
In my opinion the admin needs to change this setting, as it's important to be able to see fine detail on pics

go to www.xat.com (http://www.xat.com) and download jpeg optimizer or image optimizer. It will reduce the size of the file (not the deminsions) on a sliding scale percentage to make it under 50k to be able to post while keeping the deminsions the same.

Consider using "save for web" setting when saving an image that you want to post. DPI for displaying on web is MUCH less than required for printing. Image filesize is limited to try to keep download time for a topic reasonable for everyone.
HOw about making it so we can post off server pics by adding a url as well as uploading?
How about PNG (for screen shots) and SVG formats (for designs)?! Both "web" based.

Try this freeware picture resizer. I have used it for 2-3 years now to resize pictures for ShopBot and Sawmill Creek forums. Real easy to load and use.

You can link to images on your site by including the URL in your message. Check the box "automatically activate URLs in message" under your username and password in the "Add message box" and the URL is live when you post. This is a good way to allow people the choice of when to take the time to study your images in more detail. And it doesn't slow down the thread for others. Think of it as posting a "thumbnail" that doesn't affect the speed at which the whole page displays.
Forum software doesn't support png and svg.
