I am making a square box approx 9"dX12w" and am thinking about the design elements for the lid.

I like the look of relief carvings for something like this as opposed to vcarving. I have an idea for the center but the rest of it looks "empty" and i have gone thru all of my decorative element/corners dover cd's and haven't seen anything that i realy like, plus in this instance in my minds eye the mixing of relief and vcarving just ain't "floatin my boat".

So if anyone has either pictures or sources for inspiration they could give me i'd appreciate it. I have looked in the usual places but haven't seen anything that hit me just right.

It is one of those funny things where you don't know what you want but when you see it you know that will be just what you wanted.

How about a dished out center with a Celtic type weave?

or ...

With this one clear out the center dish and insert your relief...

Just thinking out loud ...

Or use this as is with the empty area for your existing 3d.

I have looked at the usual places (including them) and just haven't seen anything that "struck my fancy".

This is for a big girl so it probably has to be "frilly" or "girly".

I'm going to have some type of angel in the center and was looking for some type of relief carving of a corner decoration that didn't have grapes or roses in it. Maybe even some type of raised border.

I may have to go back to the dover corner decorations and try to make those vcarvings into a raised releif type object. Thanks for the suggestions though

How about this one... Lady and Bird (http://www.vectorart3d.com/store/index.cfm?q=lady+and+bird)

I've used it on some round boxes, but it could be done off to one side with some v-carved text on the other side. Matthew 6:25-34 comes to mind.

How about inlay using different colored veneers - also called marquetry? I've used this on occasion and customers love it. I think combining 3D carvings with some inlay would be quite unique. Maybe an inlay border?

If you've ever done or had a hankering to do chip carving, you can do some amazing things with this skill as well. Plus you get to shut down all the machinery, put on some nice music and enjoy.

Don if i can't do it with a power tool, I don't do it.
I got the "wiggles" as my grandkids call it so bad that trying to carve something would be disaster.
My version of aq straight line:
