Nick,
For local plywood, I have always had good success at Menards. They carry 1/2" and 3/4" MDO and a 4'x5'x1/4" floor underlayment that looks and machines almost like Baltic birch. All very stable and inexpensive. Of course I had to move to a state with no Menards, but maybe that will change someday. Our Home Depot carries 1/8" door skin Luan that is pretty good considering how thin it is. Lowes is always my last choice for anything.

Find a cabinet shop in your area. They are usually pretty helpfull with who the suppliers are. The big box stores are way too expensive for material that continues to drop in quality. I found out that the suppliers are not easily found without knowing the secret handshake. So talk to the people in your area who would use them and can teach you the handshake.
